Promotions and Marketing Fitness Coordinator

Under the supervision of the All People’s TyRon Lewis Community Gym Manager, plans, directs and coordinates the marketing and promotion for members, volunteers and supporters and builds and maintains the institution’s supporter base in the community.

Summary of Duties and Qualifications:

  • Implement short and long term promotions and marketing plans that result in increased gym membership and participation in the gym and APEDF Wellness Program
  • Develop and promote fitness programs and seminars of the gym
  • Create and distribute promotional literature, including APEDF Healthy Connections newsletter.
  • Promote the facilities and programs through community networking, media, internet postings, social media, regular HTML email announcements, website, blog and calendars.
  • Build community relationships
  • Recruit and supervise volunteers to carry out promotions and marketing work
  • Carry out general gym staffing duties including intake of new and renewing members, equipment cleaning and maintenance.
  • Provide information and resources to gym members and groups on nutrition, weight control, exercise and healthy lifestyles, with information specific to the African community.
  • Knowledgeable and passionate about fitness, nutrition, and improving health in the African community
  • At least two years related experience in marketing and promotions; Self-motivated with good communication, leadership and organizational skills. Possess basic computer skills or willingness to learn including MS Word, Excel and social media. Certifications in personal fitness training, group fitness training, class instruction, and CPR a plus.

Internship - Marketing Assistant

OVERVIEW

The African People's Education and Defense Fund (www.apedf.org) needs your skills and talents as a Marketing Assistant to the coordinator in one of its dynamic, economic development institutions ñ Uhuru Furniture and Collectibles in Oakland, CA. Be part of the team that is driven by African self-determination. Help produce a positive impact on the health, education, human rights and future of the black (African) community. Uhuru Furniture & Collectibles sells good quality furniture and collectibles at reasonable prices.

Under the direct supervision of the Marketing Coordinator, you will carry out weekly marketing assignments to ensure goals and deadlines are met and marketing and promotions campaigns are initiated and carried out in a timely fashion.

TASKS

  • Participate in weekly and monthly marketing meetings and brainstorms
  • Post, reach and moderate contacts on social media platforms
  • Weekly internet promotions and daily internet postings
  • Calls to our supporters promoting special events
  • Data entry of contacts into database
  • Research and participate in outreach table opportunities and build outreach calendar
  • Onsite coordination of volunteers in the distribution of promotional materials

Internship - Business Relations Developer

OVERVIEW

You will work to develop new and existing relationships in the business sector resulting in an increase in high quality, saleable furniture donations and increased customer support.

TASKS

  • Build and develop relationships with potentially supportive sectors to ensure ongoing donation referrals, bring in high quality, large quantity donations and inventory, as well as expand the customer base.
  • Build and maintain the contact database and e-list of partners and potential donors.
  • Build relationships with existing partners and develop a partner appreciation program.
  • Organize and carry out partner and potential partner site visits, meetings and tabling opportunities.
  • Organize appealing compilations of promotional materials and compose emails and letters to partners and potential partners.
  • Maintain consistent and timely follow-up with partners and potential partners.
  • Track results, submit daily reports and identify new key contacts of the non-profit organization for special recognition.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Possess a passion for social justice and economic development for the African community
  • Agree with the mission statement of APEDF, Uhuru Furniture and APEDF policies
  • Able to articulate the mission and programs of APEDF to the public
  • Self-motivated with good communication, flexibility, efficiency, attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Excellent phone manner and writing skills
  • Innovation with strategies to reach people and make connections
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and basic computer skills
  • Some experience in sales, donation drive(s) or similar propensity

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Transportation is not mandatory, but is a plus
  • Able to sit and make phone calls for periods of time

  • Able to articulate the mission and programs of APEDF to the public.

Physical Requirements:

Physical requirements include but aren't limited to being able to efficiently travel throughout Center City and beyond. Must have transportation, a car or bike.

Compensation:

This position requires a 1 year commitment with potential for extension or permanent position. Compensation starts at $10/hr.

Internship: Outreach Coordinator

Overview:

The African People's Education and Defense Fund (www.apedf.org) needs your skills and talents to coordinate the outreach teams in one of its dynamic institutions - Uhuru Furniture and Collectibles in Philadelphia, PA. Be part of the team making lasting changes to impact on the health, education, human rights and future of the African community. Uhuru Furniture & Collectibles is an eco-friendly, used furniture and collectibles store, selling good quality items at reasonable prices and is an important economic development institution of APEDF.

Under the direct supervision of the Marketing Coordinator, you will coordinate teams of volunteers going out to poster, door hang and hand out leaflets. This promotes Uhuru Furniture, resulting in donations, shoppers and volunteers. As the outreach coordinator you will be in direct contact with the volunteers on outreach shifts. You have the special responsibility of winning volunteers to a deeper understanding of the mission and programs of APEDF.

Tasks:

  • Organize a monthly calendar of outreach opportunities – outdoor events and tabling, postering and organized door flyering
  • Lead volunteers on outreach assignments – including flyering events, hanging door flyers and postering
  • 1-2 regular poster routes weekly
  • Assist marketing coordinator with volunteer follow up and staffing of outreach opportunities in order to meet goals
  • Lead tabling at events
  • Assemble outreach materials and packets
  • Lead brief outreach trainings for new volunteers
  • Create and post internet ads to recruit outreach volunteers
  • Provide an overview about the non-profit mission and programs to the volunteers at the beginning of every shift
  • Attend weekly marketing meetings and give a report

Qualifications:

  • Knowledgeable about Uhuru Movement programs and institutions.
  • Be organized, punctual reliable and honest

This is an unpaid internship with a commitment of a minimum of 6 months, 15-20 hours per week. Weekend hours are required.
