Overview
Uhuru Pies is a fundraising program of the African People.s Education and Defense Fund (APEDF), now in its 30th year. The program has been completely volunteer-run during its entire run in Northern California. Uhuru Pies is Northern California.s largest Thanksgiving pie sale. Our goal in 2010 is to network with individuals and organizations to sell 2,500 pies this November. The challenge is to get the word out and make people passionate about the mission and programs of APEDF. The pies are of the highest quality, so they practically sell themselves once we get the passion going.
Specific Marketing/Media Duties
- Assisting in developing a database (list) of media contacts and outlets through which to market Uhuru Pies. The list includes emails, as well as physical contact information. Make a timeline for deadlines for submitting information to various media.
- Schedule interviews between the media and representatives of Uhuru Pies.
- Modify existing press releases and draft new press releases that focus on various aspects of Uhuru Pies.
- Contact media on the outlined schedule.
- Send information to various media.
- Write and post calendar announcements to online calendars.
- Post volunteer opportunities to volunteer search websites.
Qualifications
- Creativity in your thinking; take us somewhere new and different.
- Exceptional writing skills. Know your grammar. Know your audience.
- Have a strong interest in social justice and an interest in good food.
- Be a graduate of, or currently enrolled in, a four-year undergraduate program.
- Exude professionalism.
- Familiarity with press releases or willingness to learn.
- Be a self-starter and able to work independently.
- Good organizational and communication skills.
- Ability to prioritize tasks and report to/strategize with coordinator.
- Experience with Microsoft Excel or databases.
Nice to have (but not necessary)
- Experience with graphics design tools.
- Experience with web development or blogging.
- Experience with databases.
- Experience with Photoshop.

- Help define and execute Uhuru Pies social media strategy (Twitter, Facebook, Blogs, videos).
- Write a brief plan about this strategy.
- Build and engage with fans & followers on social media channels.
- Keep a log of all social media activity.
- Maintain a consistent and growing social media presence.
- Update blog as needed.
- Make a timeline for deadlines for submitting information to social networking sites.
Qualifications
- Experience in a variety of social media (Twitter, Facebook, Blogs, YouTube, MySpace).
- Knowledge of the social media landscape; you must be an avid user of social networks.
- Experience with blogging platforms, or willingness and ability to learn quickly.
- Good writing skills . clear, succinct, pithy and accurate.
- Passion about social media technology and marketing.
- Be a self-starter and able to work independently.
- Proficient in basic HTML or tools necessary to generate social media content.
- Ability to prioritize tasks and report to/strategize with coordinator.
Nice to have (but not necessary)
